Application for child care allowance limited

As of January 1, 2012, the conditions for the application of childcare allowance (Kinderopvangtoeslag) are tightened. The retroactive application of childcare allowance is reduced to one month. The possibility to apply for the entire previous year is withdrawn. However this new rule was not correctly communicated and thereby lots of parents were late with the application for the childcare allowance.

The Dutch Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Lodewijk Asscher, stated that it’s of great importance that the childcare allowance is used by those who are entitled to. Due the tight schedule of the new rules a lot of parents were unable to apply in time. Therefore the new scheme is reversed and adjusted.

From 2014, the retroactive application of childcare allowance is three months instead of one month. For the years 2012 and 2013 it is still possible to apply for childcare allowance without any restrictions.
